develops many of the same fabrication, welding, assembly, and engineering
skills
This occupation is found in the advanced manufacturing engineering and
engineering construction sectors. The broad purpose of the occupation is to
carry out metal fabrication work using things such as rolled steel joists,
columns, channels, steel plate and metal sheet etc. Fabricators use a large
range of metals including steel, aluminium and titanium at a range of
thicknesses from 0.5mm up to over 20mm.

What Will I Learn
Learners on the Level 3 Plate Welder Apprenticeship (ST0852) will develop the knowledge and practical skills needed to safely weld plate and structural components to industry-recognised quality standards. They will learn how to prepare materials, interpret welding procedures, set up and operate a range of manual welding processes such as MIG/MAG, MMA, TIG and FCAW, and produce high-quality welds in a variety of positions and joint configurations. Learners will also gain an understanding of welding metallurgy, quality assurance, inspection techniques, health and safety requirements, and the importance of working accurately and efficiently within engineering and fabrication environments
How Will I Be Assessed
Learners are required to demonstrate all evidence requirements, learning outcomes and assessment criteria through the production of an evidence based portfolio via; assessor observations, job write ups and professional discussions. Evidence will be naturally occurring examples across a range of units selected to allow the learner to demonstrate their competency in completing their regular work based activities.

Individual employers will set the recruitment and selection criteria for their Apprenticeships. In order to optimise success, candidates will typically have 4 GCSEs at Grade C/4 or equivalent, including Mathematics, English and a Science
